The 2024 IIHF World Junior Championship is about to get underway and will run from Dec. 26, 2023 through Jan. 5, 2024. All of the tournament's games will be played in Gothenburg, Sweden.
The action begins with the United States facing Norway in one of four games to open the tournament. Meanwhile, defending champion Canada will begin its quest for a third consecutive World Junior Championship when it plays Finland in the preliminary round.
In total, 10 different countries will compete in the World Junior Championship. The United States is in Group B and will play its games at Frolundaborg in Gothenburg, as will Czechia, Norway, Slovakia and Switzerland. On the other hand, Group A will be comprised of Canada, Finland, Germany, Latvia and Sweden, and those teams will play their preliminary round games at Scandinavium in Gothenburg.
Russia remains ineligible to compete in international play due to the country's invasion of Ukraine.
The top four countries in each group will advance to the quarterfinal round, which is scheduled for Jan 2. The semifinals will take place on Jan. 4 with the championship and third-place games following on Jan. 5.
The 2024 World Juniors are here, as one of the most exciting hockey tournaments is set to take place in Sweden. The competition is a chance not only for the top teenagers in the world to showcase their talent, but also an opportunity to bring a championship to their country.
Canada enters this year as back-to-back gold medalists, coming off an overtime win over Czechia in the 2023 gold medal game. There has been no country to three-peat at the World Juniors since the Canadians ripped off five in a row during the late 2000s.
This year's World Juniors is being played outside North America for the first time since before COVID. Gothenburg, Sweden is the host site for the 2024 tournament.
The games in Gothenburg will be split between Scandinavium and Frolundaborg, two arenas in the city. Group A will play at Scandanavium, while Group B will be at Frolundaborg. The quarterfinals will be split between the two sites before Scandinavium hosts the semifinals and medal matches.
Gothenburg was supposed to host the 2022 World Juniors, however, the IIHF moved the site to Halifax, N.S. and Moncton, N.B. instead due to COVID. This is the first time Gothenburg will host the U20 competition, and seventh time the tournament is being held in Sweden.
The IIHF World Junior Hockey Championship was officially held first in 1977. In those years, NHL players were not allowed to compete in the Olympics, so the World Juniors were one of the only events in which players from the Western Hemisphere came face-to-face with players from the Soviet Union on the ice.
The tournament is particularly prestigious in Canada, but it’s an incredibly important stage for under-20 players who are trying to showcase their skills before the NHL entry draft. The main tournament features only the top 10 junior hockey teams in the world, so it’s truly an event for the best of the best young players in the sport.
